How to Apply an Eyebrow Serum: Routine, Timing and Common Mistakes

|Lash Originals Editorial Team
LashOriginals Eyebrow Serum applied in three steps: clean dry brows, brush through with the spoolie, let it dry

Once a day, brushed through clean, dry brows with the spoolie applicator, following the natural shape of the brow. Then let it dry before any other brow product goes on. Keep that up daily for 12 weeks and you have used the serum exactly as directed. Most tubes that "did nothing" were brushed over brow gel, judged at week three, or used every second day.

This guide covers the routine for the LashOriginals Eyebrow Serum, a prostaglandin-free conditioning brow serum, then the questions people ask most: before or after makeup, how often, how long it takes, and which habits waste a tube. Every instruction comes from the product's own directions and the safety and usage guide.

How to apply brow serum, step by step

The Eyebrow Serum is a 5 mL, water-based, lightweight formula built on hydrolysed keratin, biotin, peptides and panthenol. It is fast-drying, non-greasy and formulated to minimise irritation, and it supports the appearance of healthier-looking brows that are easier to shape and style. One tube is about 3 months of once-daily use on both brows and costs A$39.90.

  1. Patch test first. Apply a small amount to a discreet patch of skin and wait 24 hours to check for any sensitivity.
  2. Start with clean, dry brows. Remove brow makeup, cleanse, and make sure the brows and the skin under them are completely dry.
  3. Use clean hands and the spoolie provided. Do not share the applicator.
  4. Brush through the brows, following the natural shape. The serum should reach both the hairs and the skin along the brow line.
  5. Keep it to the brows. Use it only on the intended area. Avoid contact with the eyes, and do not apply it to irritated or damaged skin.
  6. Let it dry fully. The formula is fast-drying. Give it 1 to 2 minutes before pencil, gel or any other brow product.
  7. Close the cap tightly. Store the tube in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children.

If any serum gets into the eye, rinse thoroughly with clean water. If irritation occurs, stop using it. If it persists, seek medical advice.

Brow serum before or after makeup and skincare?

Serum first, always. It needs clean, dry brows, so it cannot go on over pencil, gel or face cream. Use it before makeup in the morning or after makeup removal at night. Either way, it goes on bare brows.

Morning: cleanse, dry, brush the serum through, let it dry for 1 to 2 minutes, then carry on with skincare and makeup. It is non-greasy, so pencil and gel go on as normal once it has dried.

Evening: remove makeup, cleanse, dry, brush the serum through, let it dry, then finish your skincare. Keep moisturiser off the brows until the serum has dried.

How often to use eyebrow serum, and for how long

Once a day. Not twice. The directions say once daily, at any time that suits you, and we suggest the evening. Twice does not speed anything up.

Daily for 12 weeks. Brow hairs turn over slowly, so this is a weeks-not-days product. What to expect from consistent daily use:

  • Weeks 2 to 3: brows feel conditioned and look more groomed. No change in fullness yet. That is normal.
  • Weeks 6 to 8: sparse areas typically start to look fuller and more defined.
  • Week 12: most people judge the full effect at around this point with continued daily use.

In our 6-week consumer study of 110 participants, self-assessed, 85% reported fuller-looking brows and 91% reported an improved overall brow appearance. Individual results vary. Then keep going. The serum conditions the hairs you already have, so most customers keep it in their routine to help maintain the appearance they have built up. One tube covers the first 12 weeks.

5 mistakes that waste a tube

  1. Applying it twice a day. The directions are once daily. It does not speed anything up. It just empties a 3-month tube in half the time.
  2. Applying it over brow products or damp brows. Serum brushed through tinted gel, or brows still wet from the shower, is not going on clean, dry brows. Remove makeup, dry, then apply.
  3. Putting pencil or gel on before it has dried. The directions say to let the serum dry before other brow products. Give it 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Skipping days. The directions say to use it consistently. Two days on and one off makes it hard to judge what the product is doing.
  5. Judging it at week three. Weeks 2 to 3 bring conditioned, more groomed-looking brows and nothing more. Fuller-looking sparse areas are a weeks 6 to 8 change. A tube abandoned in week three never reached the point where you could judge it.

Just had a brow tint, microblading or lamination?

Tinting: apply the serum after a tinting session rather than immediately before, so the tint is not diluted. Microblading: wait until the area has fully recovered, typically 4 to 6 weeks, or as your artist advises. Lamination: we do not set a wait time, so follow your brow artist's aftercare advice. Our guide to the best eyebrow serum in Australia covers what to check on a label.

Using the lash serum and the brow serum together

They are designed as one routine. Apply the Lash Serum first, one thin line along the upper lash line, then brush the Eyebrow Serum through the brows, and let both dry for 1 to 2 minutes. Keep each applicator to its own tube: the brow serum contains hydrolysed keratin and the lash serum does not, and the spoolie is built for the brow line. The Lash & Brow Serum Duo bundles both for A$69.90, against A$89.80 bought separately.

Frequently asked questions

Do you apply brow serum before or after makeup?

Before. The serum goes on clean, dry brows and dries in 1 to 2 minutes, then brow pencil, powder or gel goes on as usual. At night, apply it after makeup removal instead.

How often should you use eyebrow serum?

Once a day, at any time that suits your routine. The evening, after makeup removal, is the easiest slot. Use it consistently for the full 12 weeks, then keep it in your routine to help maintain the look.

How long does brow serum take to work?

Brows feel conditioned and look more groomed at weeks 2 to 3. Sparse areas typically start to look fuller and more defined at weeks 6 to 8, and most people judge the full effect at around week 12 of daily use. Individual results vary.

Can I use brow serum after tinting, microblading or lamination?

After tinting, yes: apply the serum after the session rather than immediately before, so the tint is not diluted. After microblading, wait until the area has fully recovered, typically 4 to 6 weeks, or as your artist advises. For lamination, follow your brow artist's aftercare advice.

What happens if I miss a day or stop using it?

Pick it up again the next day and keep going. Daily use over 12 weeks gives the conditioning ingredients time to work. Most customers keep the serum in their routine after that to help maintain the appearance they have built up.
