Once a day, one thin line along the upper lash line, on skin that is clean and completely dry. Then let it dry fully before anything else goes on. Keep that up every day for 8 to 12 weeks and you have used the serum exactly as directed. Most tubes that "did nothing" were applied to a damp lash line, applied too heavily, or abandoned in week three.
This guide covers the routine for the LashOriginals Lash Serum, a prostaglandin-free conditioning serum, then the questions people ask most: before or after mascara, how often, how long until you notice anything, and which habits empty a tube for nothing. Every instruction comes from the product's own directions and the safety and usage guide.
How to apply a lash serum, step by step
The Lash Serum is a 5 mL, water-based, oil-free and fragrance-free formula built on peptides, biotin and panthenol. It is vegan and ophthalmologist-tested, and formulated to minimise irritation. One tube is about 3 months of once-daily use and costs A$49.90.
- Patch test first. Apply a small amount to a discreet patch of skin and wait 24 hours to check for any sensitivity.
- Start with a clean, dry lash line. Remove all eye makeup, cleanse, and make sure the area is completely dry. Residual moisture can dilute the formula.
- Use clean hands and the applicator provided. Do not share the applicator, and keep it clean between uses.
- Dip once. One dip of the applicator is enough for both eyes.
- Trace one thin line along the upper lash line. Apply a thin, even layer to the skin at the base of the upper lashes. It goes on the skin, not on the lash hairs, and not on the lower lid. Avoid direct contact with the eye.
- Let it dry fully. The formula is fast-drying. Wait until it has dried completely before applying makeup, skincare or any other product.
- Close the cap tightly. Store the tube at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children.
If any serum gets into the eye, rinse thoroughly with clean, cool water. If irritation occurs, stop using it. If it persists, seek medical advice.
Lash serum before or after mascara and skincare?
Serum first, always. It needs clean, dry skin, so it cannot go on over mascara, eyeliner or eye cream. It can be used before makeup in the morning or after makeup removal at night. Either way, it goes on bare skin.
Morning: cleanse, dry, apply the serum, let it dry, then carry on with skincare and makeup. It usually dries within a minute or two, and eyeliner and mascara can go on as normal once it has dried fully.
Evening: remove makeup, cleanse, dry, apply the serum, let it dry, then finish the rest of your skincare. Keep other products off the lash line until the serum has dried.
Contact lens wearers should apply the serum at night after removing their lenses. If you also use the Eyebrow Serum, apply the lash serum first along the upper lash line, then the brow serum through the brows, and let both dry for 1 to 2 minutes.
How often to apply lash serum, and for how long
Once a day. Not twice. Applying more often does not speed anything up. We suggest the evening, after makeup removal, but any time of day you will actually remember is the right time.
Daily for 8 to 12 weeks. Here is what to expect from consistent daily use:
- Weeks 1 to 2: lashes feel softer and more flexible. No visible change yet. That is normal.
- Weeks 4 to 6: lashes typically start to look healthier, glossier and more defined. Most customers notice the first changes around week 4.
- Weeks 8 to 12: with continued daily use, longer-looking, fuller-looking and better conditioned lashes. Individual results vary.
Then 3 to 4 times a week. After the first 12 weeks, we recommend 3 to 4 applications a week to maintain the look. If you stop altogether, lashes gradually return to how they looked before over a few natural lash cycles.
One tube lasts about 3 months of once-daily use, so a single tube covers that first 12-week stretch.
5 mistakes that waste a tube
- Over-applying. A thick coat may feel heavier than necessary and empties the tube early. It does not speed up results. One dip, one thin pass, both eyes.
- Applying to a damp lash line. Straight after a shower or a face wash, the skin is still wet. Residual moisture dilutes the formula. Dry first, then apply.
- Skipping days in the first 12 weeks. Consistency matters more than quantity. Daily use over 8 to 12 weeks gives the conditioning ingredients time to work. Two nights on and one off makes it hard to judge what the product is doing.
- Using it on the lower lashes, or on the lash hairs. The directions are for the skin along the upper lash line, and the safety guide says to use the serum only on its intended application area. The lower lid is not that area, and neither are the lashes themselves.
- Stopping at week three. No visible change in weeks 1 to 2 is normal. The first changes typically show around week 4, and the full effect is judged at weeks 8 to 12. A tube abandoned in week three never reached the point where you could judge it.
Wearing extensions, or just had a lash lift?
The routine above still applies, with two additions: when to start after a set or a lift, and keeping the serum on the skin rather than on the extensions. The Lash Serum is oil-free, so it does not contain the oils that break down extension adhesive. Timing, what to tell your lash artist and a label checklist are covered in Can You Use a Lash Serum With Eyelash Extensions or After a Lash Lift?
Frequently asked questions
Do you apply lash serum before or after mascara?
Before. The serum goes on clean, dry skin along the upper lash line and dries fully before mascara, usually within a minute or two. At night, apply it after makeup removal instead.
How often should you apply lash serum?
Once a day, at any time that suits your routine. We suggest the evening, after makeup removal. After the first 12 weeks, 3 to 4 times a week is enough to maintain the look.
How long does lash serum take to work?
Most customers notice the first changes around week 4, with the full effect judged at around weeks 8 to 12 of daily use. Individual results vary. Weeks 1 to 2 usually bring no visible change, which is normal.
Can I apply lash serum to my lower lashes?
The directions are for the upper lash line only, and the safety guide says to use the serum only on its intended application area. Keep it to one thin line along the upper lash line and avoid direct contact with the eye.
What happens if I miss a day or stop using it?
Pick it up again the next day and keep going. Daily use over 8 to 12 weeks gives the conditioning ingredients time to work. If you stop altogether, lashes gradually return to how they looked before over a few natural lash cycles.
